Calling all men… I know you are out there!
The ladies missed you at the recent White Rock screening of the movie The Age of Love, which is a film about seniors’ speed dating.
Oh, there were a few of you sprinkled throughout the theatre, sandwiched between bevies of beauties of a certain age, but you were conspicuous by your absence. I am hoping to change that.
You missed a fabulous documentary by Steven Loring from Brooklyn, New York. According to his website, his film, The Age of Love, “follows the humorous and poignant adventures of 30 seniors in Rochester, N.Y. who sign up for a first-of-its-kind speed dating event exclusively for 70- to 90-year-olds.
Playful and revealing, wise and inspiring, our senior daters entertain and enlighten with a candor that puts media stereotypes to shame. Just as we’re all destined to age, and the aged were all once young, we suddenly come to realize just how much, and how little, our hearts change over a lifetime. The film takes viewers where no documentary has gone before – directly into the lives of older singles who still yearn to be seen and understood, who still desire another’s touch, who seek a new chance at love.”
And that includes you, fellas. You are no different than when you were younger. I feel confident that you haven’t lost your fire…it just may take a little longer to ignite it!
Readers of this column will remember I have written about Zoomer love before in A Second Chance at Love and Loving Relationship Can Be a Matter of Taste. The filmmaker is right on. Just because we are older doesn’t mean we lose our desire to be loved.
Research has shown that social connection is one of the social determinants of healthy aging. Social isolation is the bane of healthy aging and can lead to a plethora of physical and emotional problems.
Women get it. They are good at forming social networks and support groups, whether it be a book club or wine club, a walking group or a meet-up group. They understand the importance of social connection.
They enjoy the company of women – but guys, they want to meet you!
As I said before, I know you are out there. You are perhaps a little shy, a little reticent to reach out and touch someone. Or have coffee with someone. Or God forbid, contemplate having a relationship with someone. As for sex, I am sure you are filled with trepidation.
But I have great news for you. My book, Lovingly Arrogant: From Chaos to Contentment, soon to be published, has a chapter entitled Sex Is Wasted on the Young.
But the ‘s’ word aside, gentlemen, this is my personal invitation to you to participate in White Rock’s first-ever Speed Dating and Meet and Greet event to be held on June 29th at 1:00 pm at Crescent Gardens at 1222 King George Blvd. We are opening it up to Zoomers aged 55 to forever.
We will have 15 couples who will have 5 minutes to chat with each other and who knows, there might be a mutual connection. I will be emceeing the event…now that’s worth the price of admission!
You may not be looking for love; rather friendship or companionship. There are lots of women who have already signed up…the world is your oyster!
Call 604-541-8653 to register for this free event.
Don’t be shy fellas…life is running out. That is why it’s called Speed Dating.
