Sometimes the smallest things take up the most space in your heart.
I think Winnie the Pooh summed it up beautifully when he implied that in life it is those little things that are so meaningful to us and become our favourite memories.
Now of course it depends on what you consider little things.
A smile from a random person.
Getting up in the morning and realizing you’re still breathing.
Or watching a hummingbird flit around me as I write this column.
Or for others, it could be watching the 58th Super Bowl last night with Kansas City Chiefs versus the San Francisco 49ers with Kansas City winning the championship for the second year in a row.
The game started out as a snooze-fest but heated up in the last quarter with the game tied and going into overtime.
And the fans in the Las Vegas stadium went wild.
As America obsesses about the upcoming presidential election with an anticipated rematch between one elderly incumbent with alleged mental frailty versus a deranged, megalomaniacal septuagenarian, that was the last thing on everyone’s mind during the game.
Everyone was focused on those two brilliant young quarterbacks; namely Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy.
Or were they?
The Super Bowl could have aptly been named the Swifter Bowl as the camera focused on pop superstar Taylor Swift 21 times (I counted) as she cheered for her boyfriend, Kansas tight end Travis Kelce.
Love was definitely in the air last night.
It seems America has more important things to obsess about as in this billionaire love match.
At 6 foot 5, he is not exactly a small thing taking up the space in our beautiful gal’s heart. We wish her the best as maybe this time it will stick.
As it is Valentine’s Day this week, love is definitely on everyone’s minds.
Why are we so obsessed with celebrity love matches? Why do we even care. After all, if this love affair ends as all of her others have, she can write another album of songs much to the delight of her legion of fans and rake in more money.
As we are no longer in our blushing prime, do we long for an all-consuming love or are we simply happy for them as we reminisce about our memories of love.
I recently had lunch with a friend who is envious of my relationship of ten years and would love to be in a relationship but at our age it isn’t easy finding love again.
I have friends who are widows and divorcees who have no desire to have another relationship and are content to savour the memories of a love lost. Of a love remembered. Not such a small thing for them as it takes up most of the space in their hearts.
Valentine’s Day with all its Hallmark hype can be a difficult time for many as we reflect on our past loves and happier times.
But there is so much more in the present we can fill that empty space with and I don’t mean fixating on the perceived happiness of Taylor and Travis.
We are surrounded by love and often don’t realize it…our friends, children, grandkids and pets.
And don’t forget to look in the mirror. Look at that incredible person you are; one who has lived a long, meaningful life and has survived a thousand losses.
And yet here you are, still standing.
You are remarkable.
You know what love is.
Let it be a big thing which takes up the most space in your heart.
